University Scholars Constitution

1. Mission:

To encourage active rather than passive forms of learning, to emphasize interdisciplinary studies, and to facilitate opportunity for discourse among our most prepared students.

2. Division of Responsibility:

Program Director:  

-Recruiting faculty to offer University Scholars courses

-Advising all officers on their responsibilities

-Making sure that the following things happen every year (at the appropriate time):

      -Officer elections (spring or early fall)   

      -New scholar interview process and selection (January/February)

-Maintaining faculty awareness of the Scholars program (faculty meetings, etc). This includes orienting new professors about the program

-Chairing the University Scholars Advisory Committee (comprised of faculty appointed by the Dean of the College and elected scholars)

-Responsible for regulating spending and balancing the budget

President or Co-President:

-Planning/Running monthly meetings

-Planning year events and activities with other officers and executing plans or delegating responsibility

-Overseeing program commitments and promotion including: publicity (recruitment, campus-awareness), involvement in campus (participation in other campus program activities, i.e. Nabors Service Day), maintaining relations with the Program Fellows

-Promotes University Scholars participation in Campus Service events like Campus Kitchen Project, or Nabors Service Day

Secretary:

-Responsible for: taking attendance at all meetings and University Scholar’s events, recording minutes of meetings and promptly emailing them to members, and announcing meetings and events in Campus Notices

 Selections Chair:

-Plans and organizes the interview process in January/February, this includes: reviewing the application and advertising the program, coordinating student and teacher interviewers schedules, notifying applicants of the interview process, schedule, and the results of the interviews

Public Relations Chair:

-Responsible for promotion of University Scholars off-campus by submitting advertisements and articles to the alumni magazine and W&L newsletter about scholar achievements and updates

-Responsible for current U.S. information pamphlets for the Admissions office and Career Services, and which will be used at the Freshmen Academic Fair during orientation week

-Responsible for maintaining and updating the University Scholar WebPage and promoting University Scholars on the Washington and Lee Home Page

3. Graduation Requirements:

     1. Completion of Three University Scholars courses:

                  UNIV 201: Humanities Seminar

                  UNIV 202: Natural Science Seminar

                  UNIV 203: Social Science Seminar

      2. Thesis Requirement:

                  -Mostly satisfied by Department Honors in the Scholar’s major

                  -Can be satisfied by writing a University Scholars thesis for:

                              a) 3 credits (register INTR 493)

                              b) 6 credits (register INTR 493 twice)

                              *the 6 credit version will involve the thesis title read at commencement*

                  -Various senior thesis capstone experiences can be approved by the Program                            Director on a case by case basis

      3. Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.25

      4. Attendance at monthly meetings is mandatory

*University Scholar will be noted at Commencement and on the student’s transcript*
